Has anyone tried products with salicylic acid in it (such as, a facial wash) to reduce outbreaks? Or, at least the severity of them?
I want to start shaving again and was looking at a product the contains the acid. Seems like it makes sense.
Thoughts anyone?

Re: Salicylic Acid
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 9:27 AMBack before I stopped shaving, salicylic acid just seemed to irritate my skin. Good for zits, but bad for psoriasis.

Re: Salicylic Acid
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 10:27 AMI'm not prone to acne, but I do use products with Salicylic acid to help exfoliate.
I use Neutrogena body wash & facial pore cleanser in the shower. Doesn't seem to irritate. Luckily- lots of drugstore brands carry products with salicylic acid in them (for acne) so it's not expensive to try. If you don't like....toss.
That said, I don't leave them on my skin for more than about 30 seconds. I view this as a step to exfoliate so that my topicals have more oomph & better skin penetration. -

Re: Salicylic Acid
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 10:38 AMAlso I am thinking about trying this: (MG217) www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp
>>Salicylic Acid - Salicylic acid has "keratolytic" properties, which means that the scales (or plaques) will swell, soften and ultimately fall off. Removal of the scales makes the underlying layers of skin tissue more accessible to medication. In addition, it is antiseptic and rids the affected area of invading organisms.
And possibly this: (MG217)
www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp
>>Coal Tar - Coal tar products have long been recommended by physicians and dermatologists for the treatment of psoriasis. Patients often experience disappearance of scales, less itching and reduction of redness with the use of coal tar. Additionally, research suggests that coal tar is instrumental in slowing down the overproduction of skin cells, thus promoting healthy, clear skin or scalp.
This MG217 Product line was recomended to me by my aunt. Her friend used the product(s) (along withinjesting flaxseed oil capsuls) and experienced an almost total irradication of psoriasis. neato!
Worth a try, yes?

Re: Salicylic Acid
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 12:07 PMWow, that's great. I'll order online. I wonder if it's behind the counter because I've never seen it at Walgreens.
I was looking at some chi-chi men's product online that contained the acid, but it's really pricey. I'm just tired of that one irritated hair follicle, which turns into a big angry pimple for two months, then red peely-oozy scales for 6 months, then dry area for 2 more months. All because I shaved once. UGH! Not that I enjoy looking perpetually 13 with acne, but I need a decent face product that works. And no, Zihr doesn't work (also pricey as hell).
Thanks,

Re: Salicylic Acid
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 1:21 PMI called walgreens first and they don't stock it. Am having to order as well.
By the way, the Neotrogena products are 2% salicylic acid, while the MG217 products are 3% -

Re: Salicylic Acid
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 1:48 PMI hear ya! Yesterday at my Samba dance class, our instructor gave a little "You are all so beautiful speech" mid lesson. I nearly burst into tears cuz I just didn't feel it right then.
Of course, that's PMS talking.

Re: Salicylic Acid
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 2:21 PMThough I don't know what you mean regarding PMS, I do know the frustration you must feel.
I remember coming home (drunk) one night, looking at my knuckles and considering using sandpaper.
I know some folks have it worse, with psoriasis or a multitude of other medical conditions, but that doesn't help at three o'clock in the moring when you have no distractions but drunken self-pity and a loathing of a part of yourself.
Don't make in bad jokes... not THAT part!! -

Re: Salicylic Acid
Thu, November 3, 2005 - 2:30 PMUrgghh...
Just re-read that and realized it was sort of a downer post.
To accentuate the positive:
I have changed during the last few years in my perception of self and the world around me.
In 2001, I had a series of very tragic and emotionally rending events. Multiple deaths in my family, a horrible marriage and a divorce, surgery, court cases, bahh, blah and etc...
I emerged from that "ring of fire" with two words that have helped me to become a calmer and generally happier person.
"Screw (PG-13 version) It"
May seem a bit nihilistic, but, if used judiciously, and truly believed, these are two of the most useful; words in the human language.
I ceased to be troubled if a insensitive drive-thru attendent recoiled when they saw my knuckles reaching out for the change.
I ceased to care if I caught anyone staring.
I'm not gonna waste my time being concerned about those people.
I sleep pretty good now.

Re: Salicylic Acid
Mon, November 7, 2005 - 10:24 AMI'v been using stuff called "Dermarest" that's 3% salicylic acid and it seems to help. It's made by DEL Pharmaceutical, Inc. "www.dellabs.com", I think that's their web-site. As far as people asking about it, I tell them I got it from my ancestors; or, if they piss me off too much, I tell them I'm part dinosaur and, "We Have Come To Take Our Planet Back." Shuts them up. Kids get into that explanation, but I tell the kids the truth and just go on.

Mon, November 7, 2005 - 10:28 AMMe again - just back from www.dermarest.com. -Look 'n' see- I'm just here for the ride.
Getting drunk does not help but it sure puts everything in perspective (of a sort). Each to their own. -

Re: Salicylic Acid
Mon, November 7, 2005 - 5:16 PMI have had good experiances with Salicylic Acid.
I'll take a long, hot shower, dry off and then spend the rest of the day rubbing the salicylic acid gel stuff onto my spots untill I get all of the extra skin off.
Then the use of steroid creams seem much more effective when it can really get under the flakes.
Salicylic Acid by itself has never helped me stay clear, nor has pine tar. I try to use them together with other meds and that seems to work. (when I keep up with it while I'm less over wieght and not smoking and drinking too much)
I'm interested in hearing about some of these products. -

Re: Salicylic Acid
Mon, November 7, 2005 - 8:56 PMSalicylic Acid can be a funny thing. My hands are shot, from both psoriasis and a few warts. The over the counter treatment for warts is 17% salicylic acid I believe. Problem is, after getting rid of a wart, the area of the skin never heals properly and psoriasis takes over. Looks like I'm screwed...

Re: Salicylic Acid
Tue, November 8, 2005 - 8:33 AM"I'll take a long, hot shower..."
I think most derm docs agree that long hot showers are contraindicated for psoriasis. At least one has told me that I shouldn't shower every day. I can't stand not showering every morning, but when I think of it I try to make my showers shorter and cooler. -

Re: Salicylic Acid
Thu, November 10, 2005 - 10:36 AMI've had a few recommend that I shower daily and moisturize to help keep my lesions flake free and soft. But cracking has been a big problem for me - I've got spots around my waist and sometimes if I've not taken care and turn around juuuust the right way.. You get the picture.
Perhaps the shower thing depends on the person?
Regarding salicylic acid, I'd used T/Sal for *years* along with T/Gel to help keeps my scalp happier. I found that it helps remove the flakes and the stubborn thick lesions on my scalp, but itself didn't do much to help them from coming back. Actually, by itself it probably irritated my skin, which brought on more inflammation, which brought on more flakes.. Ugh. But if you treat with something afterwards (T/Gel was enough for me a lot of the time, and steroidal solution for the stubborn places) it helps immensely because the treatment works better.
In ay case, I was quite happy with T/Sal and T/Gel for a long time. I think salicyclic acid is a good thing, but I don't think my skin and hair liked the harsh shampoos, because I've been a lot happier since I stopped using them. Just like with anything YMMV. -

Re: Salicylic Acid
Mon, November 14, 2005 - 12:07 AMI have also used T/Gel for a long time, I like T/Sal bettter (because it dosn't stink) but it is harder for me to find in stores.
I use T/Gel on my face and ears while I was my hair, then I get out and shave my face with T/Gel, then back to the shower to rinse off and wait of the flakes to soften. This works very well to clear up my face and ears. (for the few days between showers)

Re: Salicylic Acid
Mon, November 14, 2005 - 12:04 AMYeah, when I say hot I don't mean really hot, and I can't shower everyday, my skin hates it. Even every other day is too much for it.
My long showers are kind like soaking in a tub, I just stay in until the flakes get soft.
I like a cooler shower, but it doesn't seem to soften up my skin.
