Re: Arthritis
Sun, March 6, 2005 - 4:18 AMthat sucks, I'd be pretty bummed if I couldn't play any more
my mom has a good case of psoriatic arthritis, but she hasn't tried to treat it so the story isn't much help to others
i got my p from her, maybe i'll get her psoriatic arthritis also (something to look forward to)

Re: Arthritis
Mon, April 4, 2005 - 9:52 AMCount me in the PA club! Although, I have to admit that mine's not actually settled in for good. I only have the bad symptoms after bad infections or during particularly bad weather, and usually my joints are slightly achey. I've been trying my best to keep my joints happliy lubricated. My fingers are affected the worst and though I've never aspired to be a guitar god <g>, it still sucks. I'm 26 now and fear a little what it'll be like in 20 years. But I'm hopeful that one of these days I'll find a combination of lifestyle, food, water, medication that will make it all better. :)

Re: Arthritis
Mon, April 4, 2005 - 12:23 PMYes, achey joints and such. Not always, but it's there. I drink plenty of water and STRETCH and work out , but not too much. I try to keep the rest of my body in shape so that it can support achey joints.
Glucosamine is supposed to help and I've definitley noticed a difference. -

Re: Arthritis
Mon, April 4, 2005 - 1:45 PMI recently got back on the workout kick. I decided that running was doing more harm than good, so I'm walking (and hiking). Now I'd love to find a yoga instructor that I get along with. I'm remember being more flexible though I stretch and sometimes I wonder if I hurt myself more stretching improperly. But all in due time. -

Re: Arthritis
Fri, April 22, 2005 - 3:30 PMPA here - it hit suddenly last summer. I went from almost no noticable symptoms to having difficulty walking, getting out of bed, etc. Finally, I went to see a specialist. I've been taking Enbrel for about. . . 5 months and I can do everything I used to do and more. -

Re: Arthritis
Fri, April 22, 2005 - 3:46 PMGreat to hear the Enbrel is working so well for you. Any side effects? Is your insurance covering it? That stuff is suuuper expensive from what I hear. My doc told me that my insurance probably would refuse to cover it unless methotrexate proved inneffective. But who wants to take that?

Re: Arthritis
Fri, April 22, 2005 - 4:42 PMNo side effects that I have noticed to date. My insurance (BC/BS HMO) does cover it - I end up paying under $100. for a 3 months supply. I do know that if you do not have insurance, the mfg. of Enbrel will consider providing the med. at low/or no cost to you depending on your need.
My MD had me on a sulfur based med. for about 3 months prior to suggesting the Enbrel. He is a pretty conservsative guy, and told me he rarely prescribes methtrexate as the side effects are too risky and he prefers a good track record (lots of years on the market). Anyhow, I worried initially about side effects, but the positive effects were almost immediate. Two days after taking my first injection I was able to get out of bed and get to the bathroom without praying I wouldn't make it because it hurt too much to walk.
I was hoping the Enbrel would have had more of an effect on the dermal outbreaks. I have had really bad p on my hands on and off since my teens - which leads to a lot of self-consciousness and some pain. Mostly my hands and feet have been affected. However, I have a really bad flesh injury to my knee and have since had an outbreak there.
I would suggest Enbrel to anyone who is in serious pain from pa and who has an MD who they know and trust.

Re: Arthritis
Fri, August 19, 2005 - 11:55 AMEven then, don't put too much faith in the doctors. There's no real test for PA, they just check your blood for indicators of chronic inflammation and try to rule a bunch of other things out. When they're out of ideas they'll say "Well, it must be Psoriatic Arthritis." Then they'll prescribe NSAIDs if it's minor, or some scary-ass poison like methotrexate to pummel your immune system into submission if it's more serious. Side effects include fatigue, vulnerability to serious infections, and increased cancer risk. I hear Enbrel is more effective and less scary, but insurance won't cover the $1000 a month price tag unless methotrexate has no effect.
In short, modern medicine has not a clue what PA is or how to treat it. Sorry to be so negative, but this has been my experience. -

Sat, August 20, 2005 - 3:48 AMThanks for the heads up. I'll just stick to being glad asprin is still working and the inflammation is limited to one heel right now. -

Re: Arthritis
Fri, June 30, 2006 - 9:59 AMSo, count me in here, for the last four weeks or so my middle toe has swollen up 3 times it's size, red & sausage-like for no apparent reason. Can barely bend or point my toe. Pain extends well into my foot. At first I thought I had sprained or broken it, but my life is not so wild that I would not remember breaking a toe so I've been suspicious. Then, my middle finger has started doing the same thing (fuck you, psoriasis?). My self diagnosis? AP. I've made the doctor's appt but have to wait until Aug. In the meantime I'm limping around like a gimp. It's much worse in the mornings.
Been doing a little reading:
www.medicinenet.com/psoriati...ge5.htm#7
www.medicinenet.com/psoriati...ge2.htm#3
yeah yeah yeah. I already have glucosamine in the med cabinet. Think I'll pop some now. But from what I've read I should keep active & lubed? yes?

Tue, July 11, 2006 - 9:24 AMthings seem to be getting worse & it feels scary. I'm really having a hard time walking on the one foot. Funny how the best thing for you is the very thing that hurts.
